What "HD" means in YouTube's thumbnail pipeline
YouTube's thumbnail system generates a fixed set of variants for every uploaded video. The largest of those variants is maxresdefault.jpg at 1280×720 pixels — what most creators casually call the "HD thumbnail." That is the upper bound. There is no native 1080p, 1440p, or 4K thumbnail; tools that promise those resolutions are upscaling the same 1280×720 source.
